5 Things to do in the Summer that Don’t Require Money

Grow a Garden

Did you know that you can grow food for free from the food you buy in the store? It’s true! It doesn’t work for all of them but some foods like strawberries, tomatoes, and peppers you can take the seeds and plant them. You can also do this with bags of dried beans, just not the ones that come in a can. You can also regrow some foods like green onions, lettuce, and celery by sticking the ends of them in water.

Take a Walk

Going for a walk is a great way to get out of the house and keep minds young and old stimulated. You see our minds crave new things so something like going for a walk down a street we’ve never been down or taking a walk through a park or even going for a hike is great fuel for our brains. It keeps boredom away and gives us stimulation that can keep mild depression at bay. Being out in the sun also has a ton of amazing health benefits too! Walking is just great for our body, mind, and soul. Just make sure everyone leaves their phones at home.

Try Geocaching

If you have a kid who loves treasure hunts, and lets be honest, who doesn’t love a good treasure hunt, then Geocaching might just be the game for you. Out in the world, literally all over the world, there are caches filled with random little items and people go out to find them. This is Geocaching. Bring your own little gadgets or small old toys to put in the cache. It’s an activity that is great for the whole family.

Go Swimming

Nearly 70% of all African American kids in the United States can’t swim. An incredibly dangerous statistic that is responsible for hundreds of deaths every year. Summer time is the best time for kids to get used to being in water and learning how to swim. Start out with slow moving shallow rivers or lakes with a lot of shallow ground. Oceans aren’t a good place to learn to swim as many of them have severe drop-offs and you also have to fight against the tide which will always want to pull you further from shore. There are a ton of amazing benefits to swimming though so don’t let a lack of experience stop you!

Go to the Library

Though our hearts may want to, the reality is we can’t spend all day every day throughout the summer outside and doing there. There is always some downtime to be had. This is a great time for reading! Make a point of putting trips to the library on your calendar and load up on as many books as you can. This way there is always something new to read for those random downtimes that are bound to come up. Kids also benefit hugely from reading over the summer. They won’t forget as much between school years and it will be easier for them to get back into school when the summer ends.
