Black Panther Kingdom of Wakanda Series Announced for Disney+

Disney recently surprised the world just with the announcement of Kingdom of Wakanda, a new Marvel series that will be based in Wakanda, the home of the Black Panther. I had the amazing privilege of attending the unforgettable Black Panther Premiere. It was indeed one of my favorite junkets ever, and included a host of my favorite blogger boos.  I am super excited about this new series, and I just know it is going to be phenomenal.

The show is currently unnamed but is being referred to as Kingdom of Wakanda by many media sources. Details on the show are scarce at the moment but here are a few things we do know.  The show will be created by Ryan Coogler, the writer and director of Black Panther along with his multimedia company Proximity Media which has signed a 5 year deal with Disney.  It will be a drama that takes place in Wakanda. So, for all of us who fell in love with Wakanda from Black Panther, we are about to see a whole lot more of it.  Most importantly, this show isn’t replacing Black Panther II which is still set to be released in 2022.

That’s really all we know at this point. We don’t know when it will be released or much of anything really. But that isn’t going to stop me from speculating on possibilities. First, I would say that most likely the show won’t be released until after the release of Black Panther II, and in that movie, it is very likely that T’Challa’s sister Shuri will take over as Queen and as Black Panther. This is something that happened in the comics.

M’Baku

After the events of Black Panther, we know that M’Baku and his tribe joined the Wakandan Army but we don’t really know much else. Did he take over as King after the Blip, aka the Snappening? This show might be about M’Baku and his family adjusting to life in the highly technological Wakanda.

Dora Milaje

There seems to be a lot of support at the moment for a show that focuses on the Dora Milaje, the King’s royal guards. One way that the show could go is following the Dora Milaje as they must defend Wakanda and the new King or Queen from outsiders as well as threats from inside Wakanda itself.

Something Completely Different

It is equally possible that Marvel will follow in the footsteps of The Mandalorian and go with a completely new character. It would be really interesting to see Wakanda from the point of view of someone who has no connection to the royal family at all. Or it might take place in the past even. The possibilities there are endless.

Kingdom of Wakanda was a fantastic announcement for Marvel and Disney to make right at the start of Black History Month. It will help further representation on the Disney+ platform. I for one can’t wait to see what Ryan Coogler comes up with next.
